Socket enlargers enable lamps and other lighting fixtures to work with light bulbs that are too large for their sockets. With a threaded contact on one end, a socket adapter can receive a larger bulb on the other once it is screwed into a lamp’s socket. Electricity can then pass normally from lamp socket, through the adapter, into the bulb.

Though they can be used as makeshift solutions in situations where a homeowner lacks light bulbs that are sized to fit existing lamps, socket enlargers are generally utilized to scale up lamps without having to resort to a complete reworking of the fixture. As such they are often a simple and economical way to modify lamps and fixtures.
